LEXINGTON, Ky. – West Alabama Head Volleyball Coach Tabitha Turner has been honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as a member of the organization’s 2010 Thirty Under 30 list.
The award was created in 2009 to honor thirty of the up-and-coming volleyball coaches under 30 years old in the sport at all levels of the game. A nomination period was held last fall, with the requirement that the nominee had to be younger than 30 years old in 2010. The list of winners will be featured in the February/March issue of Coaching Volleyball.
Turner propelled the Tiger volleyball program to new heights in 2009 in her first season at the helm and first as a head coach. The Wilmington, N.C.-native guided UWA to its first Gulf South Conference East Division crown and a runner up spot in the GSC Tournament. Turner was voted GSC East Division Co-Coach of the Year by her peers in the division after the Red and White finished the season 30-8 overall and 8-2 inside league play. Under Turner’s watch, Four Tigers were tabbed All-GSC East Division as seniors Jessica Crook, Jordan Kent and Ana Gabriela Pedrosa were named All-GSC East First Team. Sophomore Alexis McHale earned All-GSC East Second Team status.
“Tabitha Turner is a natural” said UWA Director of Athletics Dr. E. J. Brophy. “Some people in this business just have an innate knack for conveying information to young people in a way that creates success, and Coach Turner certainly has proven that she can do that very well. We are extremely proud of her selection as a Volleyball Top 30 under 30”.
Of the thirty recipients, 19 are assistant coaches and 11 are head coaches. Nine are NCAA Division II women's coaches, eight are NCAA Division I women's coaches, three are NCAA Division III women's coaches, three coach NCAA Division I-II men, two are from Two-Year Colleges, two are club coaches and one is a high school girl's coach.
