JACKSON, Tenn. – The University of West Alabama softball team posted a sweep over Lambuth University on Sunday in Jackson, Tenn. as UWA topped the Eagles 9-3 in the opener and claimed a 7-3 decision the second game.
The Tigers reached the 20-win plateau with the pair of wins and will enter Monday’s clash with Gulf South Conference West foe Christian Brothers with a 20-6 overall mark. UWA split with North Alabama to open the GSC slate on Saturday. The UWA-CBU twinbill is set for 1 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.
In the opener, UWA plated runs in all but its first plate appearance. The Red and White broke a 1-1 tie in the third with back-to-back home runs from Kelli Hartley and Valisha Fincher. The big inning came in the fourth as UWA pushed across three runs to extend the lead to 6-1. The Tigers expanded the lead with solo runs in their final three at-bats. All three of LU’s runs came off a solo home run in the second and a two-run shot in the sixth. Angela Smith led the Tiger charge with three hits in the affair, while Jessica Powell turned in a multi-hit outing.
Junior Katie Ford returned to the win column after suffering her first loss of the season against UNA on Saturday. Ford moved to 14-1 on the season after tossing five innings and allowing just one run. Ford along with Hannah Billingsley, who finished the game, allowed just five LU hits in the contest.
The second game mimicked the first game as UWA broke open a 1-1 contest in the third as it put together a six spot on the board. The Tigers capitalized on the long ball as Anna Shartzer blast a solo shot in the frame along with Angela Hanna blasting her second grand slam of the season later in the inning. That at bat was all UWA needed as Billingsley and Jessica Cervates combined to clip the Eagles’ bats the rest of the way. The final two runs of the game came off an Eagle two-run dinger. The Billingsley and Cervantes duo combined to strike out seven in the affair.
