UWA Claims Series with 6-5 Win over Lambuth

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team held off a late charge from Lambuth on Sunday afternoon to claim the series with a 6-5 win. The series win is the first for UWA (16-9) since Mar. 7 when the Tigers swept Talladega College.

Deon Williams paced the Red and White at the dish as the Tuscaloosa, Ala.-junior went 3-for-4 with a runs scored and three stolen bases. Jody Morgan and Sam McCormack also tallied multiple hits in the contest as each went 2-for-4 at the plate. McCormack recorded two RBI while Morgan had a run scored. 

Kasey Nafzger (3-3) logged the win with six innings of work. The Westerville, Ohio-senior allowed five runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Dom Sapp (Geneva, N.Y.) faced seven batters in two innings of work, recording a strikeout and Huntsville, Ala.-native, Brian Burgess (6) tallied his 22nd career save with the final inning of work, fanning the final three Eagle batters. 

The Tigers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with single spots in the first, second and fourth innings and a three-run third inning. Douglas Frazier, a Northport, Ala.-native, was the first run of the contest as he scored on a wild pitch. Kevin Deese put the Red and White up 2-0 as he crossed the dish on a Dallas Rogers sacrifice fly to right field. 

Deese singled up the middle to start the scoring in the third inning as he plated Williams. McCormack finished off the scoring in the inning with a double to left center that plated Morgan and Deese. Frazier concluded the scoring in the game for UWA in the sixth as the senior shortstop garnered his third homerun of the season with a one out round tripper to left. 

LU (23-7) cut the lead to two runs with a four run, fifth inning. The Eagles strung along hits along with assistance from Tiger miscues to put together the big inning for the Blue and White. Mike Davis concluded the inning with a two-run, homer to left field that scored Mitch McClay. LU added its final run of the game in the sixth but couldn't overcome the early deficit. 

West Alabama returns to action on Tuesday, Mar. 23 as UWA hosts Auburn Montgomery. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. The game will be available via live stats and a video stream at www.uwaathletics.com.
