UWA Faces Millsaps In Non-Conference Duel

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team will put the finishing touches on its non-conference schedule as UWA travels to Jackson Miss. on Tuesday against NCAA Division III foe Millsaps College. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. on the Millsaps campus.

The Tigers enter Tuesday's duel with a 37-20 overall record after salvaging a split with North Alabama on Sunday. UWA dropped a 5-4, 10 inning decision in the opener against UNA before taking game two, 3-1. The Tigers head into the final weekend of the regular season tied with UNA for the fourth and final Gulf South Conference Tournament spot. Both UWA and UNA square off with UAH and West Georgia next weekend.

UWA will be looking for the season sweep of the Majors of MC. The Red and White claimed both contests played earlier this season the UWA Softball Complex on March 31. The Majors (21-15) have won seven out of their last eight games, including capturing the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's West Division crown this past weekend.

UWA climbed over .300 mark at the plate this past week after putting together a .372 batting average in its five wins. The Tigers collected 68 hits in six games, including 11 home runs. Senior catcher Angela Hanna leads the team at the dish with a .384 clip and a team-best 31 RBI. Freshman Anna Shartzer leads UWA in hits with 68. The Gulf Shores, Ala.-native put together a 17-game hitting streak that was snapped in Sunday's second game with UNA. Junior Katie Ford earned a win over Lambuth on Saturday after allowing just run and scattering three hits. Against North Alabama, she nearly equaled her season high in strikeouts as Ford fanned 10 Lions in her six innings of work. The double-digit strikeout total was her third of the season and third time in the last four outings in the circle for the Garden City, Kan. right hander.

UWA visits nationally-ranked UAH on Saturday, April 24 at 2 p.m. before trekking to Carrollton, Ga. on Sunday for a Noon CST match up with UWG.
