BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of West Alabama placed five student-athletes on the Gulf South Conference’s 2010 Spring All-Academic Team, announced by the league office. UWA recorded 22 selections to the conference’s 2010 Spring Academic Honor Roll.
The Tiger softball team landed three members on the league’s East All-Academic Team led by 2010 All-GSC Second Team selection Lauren Mills. Mills finished her two-year stint in Livingston as a two-time all conference performer. Seniors Angela Hanna and Mary Wright were also tabbed to the softball academic squad. Douglas Frazier earned a spot on the GSC Baseball Academic Team for the second-straight year, while Tiger netter Danish Ahmad was tabbed to the GSC East Men’s Academic Team.
These five individuals played an integral part in their respective sport this spring along with excelling in the classroom. The softball trio helped guide the Red and White to a 38-22 mark on the diamond. Hanna led UWA with ten home runs this season. Wright, a four-year member of the GSC Academic Honor Roll, played in 36 games and scored 16 times. Frazier earned GSC East Second Team honors and ranked among the top offensive players for UWA during the 2010 campaign. Ahmad keyed the Tigers’ success on the tennis courts this past season, which included a second trip to the NCAA Regional. Ahmad sealed UWA’s NCAA First Round win over UAH with a win at No. 1 singles. The Tigers conclude the season with a school-record 23 wins.
The Spring All-Academic Team is selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominated student-athletes must have an overall grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career and may not be freshmen or first-semester or quarter transfers. The student-athlete must be a significant contributor to the squad. Other factors include leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities.
To earn GSC Honor Roll status, student-athletes must achieve at least a 3.0 GPA. The entire list of UWA members on the honor roll is listed below.
