LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama football team looks to close out the regular season with a win on Saturday, Nov. 12 as UWA (7-3) hosts Georgia State. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Tiger seniors will be honored prior to the start of the game. UWA also welcomes all veterans to attend the GSU game as they will be permitted free with proper ID or in uniform.
The Red and White are coming off a 36-34 setback at top-ranked Delta State last weekend, which dropped the Tigers to No. 4 in the NCAA Division II Super Region II Rankings. In an effort to recover from a 30-point deficit, UWA outscored the Statesmen 34-6 down the stretch before following by two points. The Red and White finished the evening with 407 yards after accumulating just 14 yards in the opening quarter.
Matt Willis led the offensive effort with his eight straight 100-yard performance as the Collins, Miss., native tallied 101 on the ground. Willis amassed a career-high three rushing touchdowns in the setback. Smith also played a large part in the Tigers' rushing attack as the Flora, Miss., product totaled 94 yards on eight carries. Caldwell finished the night with 157 yards through the air.
Willis continues to pilot the UWA offense. Willis is one touchdown away from tying two scoring records. The Collins, Miss., native is a rushing TD from tying the single-season rushing touchdown and touchdown record. Willis has 13 rushing TDs this season and 14 total scores in 10 games. Marcus Ross holds both marks. Willis is also 88 yards away from tying Ross' 2004, single season rushing record of 1,325.
The Tigers will also look to continue its dominance at home this weekend against the Panthers. Since 2008, Tiger Stadium has become a tough place for teams to pick up victories. Over the last four seasons UWA has composed an 18-4 record on its home turf.
GSU enters the weekend's contest having competed in three consecutive overtime affairs. The Bill Curry coached Panthers defeated South Alabama 27-20 three weeks ago, but has suffered back-to-back losses to Texas-San Antonio and St. Francis the last two weekends.
GSU has used three quarterbacks this season will each throwing for more than 450 yards or more. Kelton Hill leads the way with 540 yards through the air with six TD tosses. Albert Wilson and Danny Williams stand out as favorite targets for the trio of signal callers as each have hauled in 25 or more receptions this season. Wilson leads the way in yardage with 644 while also leading the receiving corp with five TD catches. Williams has 387 yards with only a pair of scores.
