UWA Baseball Falls in Two Extra Inning Contests

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The University of West Alabama baseball team dropped a pair of heart-breaking extra inning contests to Rollins College Saturday, bringing up the curtain on the 2012 season.

With the teams deciding to play a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning contest, the Tigers came up on the short end of two one-run losses, falling to Rollins 2-1 in the bottom of the tenth of the first game and 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth of the second contest.

In the first game, Rollins scored first after a Tars' double scored the go-ahead run to make it a 1-0 contest. From that point on, the two teams were locked in a pitcher's duel until Chris Duncan homered to left to tie that game at 1-1.

The drama then came at the bottom of the tenth when Rollins' Holloway started the inning off with a single.  After a sacrifice fly and a throwing error by the Tiger third-baseman, Holloway then scored the winning run off a single to put the final at 2-1.

The second game was much like the first as Rollins took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. After Rollins jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, the Tigers bounced back for a three-run seventh inning to tie the contest at 3-3. With the score at 3-3 at the end of the seventh, West Alabama then allowed another Holloway score to put the final at 4-3.

UWA and Rollins finish the three-game series tomorrow afternoon with the final game slated to begin at 11 a.m.
