WINTER PARK, Fla. – The University of West Alabama baseball team concluded a tough opening weekend of the 2012 season, falling to Rollins College 10-4 Sunday afternoon. With the loss, UWA falls to 0-3 on the season as the squad heads home for an eight-game home stand.
After dropping two games on Saturday by a combined two runs, West Alabama's effort to salvage the three-game series with a Sunday triumph fell short as Rollins maintained a strong lead for most of the nine innings played.
The Tigers did come out strong in the first inning, scoring the game's first run. Center fielder
Ladarrius Cole doubled in the contest's first at-bat, finally scoring after a wild pitch allowed Cole to move to third followed by D.J. Turo's hit to the shortstop which enabled Cole to advance home.
After a scoreless first inning, Rollins then found the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the second. West Alabama answered the call from the Tars, plating two runs in the top of the fourth after Turo homered and drove in
Chris Duncan to tie the score at 3-3.
Throughout the final five innings, Rollins then went on a tear, outscoring UWA 7-1 to put the final score at 10-4. Most of those runs came in part because of four Tiger errors coupled with 14 hits allowed by the UWA pitching staff.
For the game, West Alabama was led by first baseman D.J. Turo who went 1-for-3 on the day, driving in three runs. His lone hit came off a homerun in the fourth inning that tied the game at 3-3. Meanwhile, pitcher
Colter Millican picks up the loss for the Tigers.
UWA now returns to Livingston, Ala., for the first game of an eight-game home stand Wednesday afternoon against Faulkner. Opening pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
