MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's tennis team won its 16
th consecutive match Saturday, defeating North Alabama, 5-2, in the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference Championships at Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
The win improves 37
th-ranked UWA to 22-2 heading into Saturday afternoon's semi-final match against No. 2 seed Valdosta State at Lagoon Park. VSU was the last team to defeat UWA, squeaking out a 5-4 decision Feb. 24 in Valdosta, Ga.
After beginning the match losing two of three in doubles,
Nestor Vargas,
Anton Ivanov,
Kike Ruiz and
Manuel Grossmann won singles matches to seal the victory for West Alabama. Vargas, Ivanov and Ruiz all won in straight sets.
