Birmingham, Ala. — West Alabama's
Nestor Vargas has been named to the Gulf South Conference 2013 Men's Tennis All-Conference Team.
Playing in the No. 1 singles position and No.2 doubles spot with
Kike Ruiz, Vargas helped lead UWA to a 23-3 record and the runner-up spot in the GSC Tournament. Vargas posted a 20-4 record in singles and was 21-5 teaming with Ruiz in doubles play.
Vargas and his Tiger teammates travel to Pensacola for the NCAA Division II South Regional that begins Saturday on the University of West Florida campus. UWA will meet Lynn University at 2 p.m., with the winner advancing to play the winner of the West Florida-Florida Southern match on Sunday.
This is the first selection to the team for Vargas, a junior from Bogota, Columbia. Five schools placed players on the all-conference squad, led by West Florida with three. Valdosta State had two players, while Alabama-Huntsville, Delta State and UWA completed the squad.
West Florida junior Bruno Savi was named GSC Player of the Year for the second straight season. Savi helped lead the Argonauts to their second consecutive GSC Title last weekend and the No. 2 seed in the NCAA South Region Tournament. Joachim Schemm became the third consecutive Valdosta State player to be tabbed GSC Freshman of the Year.
West Florida's Derrick Racine was named GSC Coach of the Year for the second year in row. He guided the Argonauts to a successful defense of their GSC Title and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA South Region Tournament.
