LEXINGTON, Ky. –
Emily Gerding earned her 100
th career victory for the West Alabama women's tennis team, leading the Tigers to a 9-0 victory over Transylvania University Friday in the first of a three-match swing through Kentucky for UWA.
“I am really proud of Emily for a great accomplishment in her career at West Alabama,” head coach
Glen Fanelli said. “Our ladies, whom I'm calling 'The Battling Six', continue to try to prove themselves and earn some respect from their peers nationally.”
West Alabama improved its record to 16-7 with the victory. The Tigers play at Western Kentucky on Saturday. Transylvania dropped to 8-9.
Gerding's 100
th win came 6-0, 6-1 over Nike Larain in No. 5 singles. The Tigers won all six singles matches in straight sets after sweeping the doubles to begin the day.
Natalia Cardenas defeated Claire Mielcarek (6-4, 6-4),
Helga Jeske beat Megan Dixon (6-2, 6-2),
Jill Furlong downed Victoria Haugli (6-0, 6-0),
Dasha Popova defeated Savannah Barnett (6-1, 6-0) and
Shannon McEvoy won over Jessica Shotwell (6-0, 6-0) in singles.
In No.1 singles, Jeske and McEvoy defeated Mielcarek and Dixon, 8-5. Furlong and Cardenas won No. 2 singles over Haugli and Kaitlin Hizny, 8-2, while Popova and Gerding won 8-1 over Carolina Tapscott and Barnett in No. 3 doubles.
