Tigers Down Blazers 4-0 in GSC Play

Box Score

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Chelsea Commings, Kirsten Reilly and Marie Dreezen combined for four goals as West Alabama women's soccer grabbed a 4-0 victory over Gulf South Conference foe Valdosta State on Sunday at Tiger Stadium.

The Tigers improve to 4-2 on the season, moving to 2-0 in GSC action. The Blazers fall to 0-5-1, dropping to 0-2 in league action.

"I'm absolutely delighted for the girls," UWA head coach Graeme Orr said. "We worked extremely hard and got the reward."

"Every game in this conference is going to be tough, and to keep a clean sheet today makes me very proud."

West Alabama jumped out to a 1-0 lead over Valdosta State in the 30th minute after Reilly launched a long shot off the crossbar to set up Commings with a goal scoring opportunity. Commings' header attempt beat the keeper on the left side of the goal for the Tiger forward's second goal of the season.

Before the half ended, TeMia Pride drew a foul inside the box to give Reilly a chance to extend the Tigers' lead with a penalty kick. Reilly took advantage of the one-on-one play to net her second score of the season in the 43rd minute.

Four minutes into the second half, Reilly grabbed another penalty kick opportunity after Chelsea Commings was fouled inside the box. VSU goalkeeper Alyssa Curtis blocked Reilly's penalty attempt, but failed to secure the ball. Reilly booted the loose ball into the lower left corner of the goal, improving UWA's lead to 3-0.

Marie Dreezen netted her first goal of the year in the 60th minute on an assist from Taylor Brackin, rounding out the day's scoring with the Tigers on top 4-0.

Issy Foster (3-2) earned the win, grabbing one save in the net before leaving the game in the 36th minute. Curtis (0-5-1) took the loss, allowing four goals while making eight saves.

West Alabama will hit the road to take on North Alabama in a GSC contest on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
